About Kids Kits
Welcome to Kids Kits. We are a family-run business located in the foothills of the Southern Drakensberg. We watched the world of toys become increasingly digital and plastic-heavy. In response, we decided to return to basics–combining a deep understanding of how children learn with the technical expertise required to design high-quality, hands-on DIY projects for children.
About US
Richard and Cathy Fry are the owners of Kids Kits. Cathy is the Founding Director of Ukhanyiso Ebantwini NPC, with over 30 years of teaching and training experience in South Africa. She has served as principal of two leading independent junior girls’ schools in Johannesburg and specialises in ECD, primary education, school leadership, and curriculum development.
Cathy has spent many years studying and developing programmes to encourage creative and critical thinking in children. She is an enthusiastic gardener and an ardent educationalist. Richard retired from a successful career as an engineer with over 40 years of engineering and management experience in South Africa. He is a keen bird watcher, nature lover and loves working with wood. They are both devoted to their children and grandchildren. Kids Kits came about because of them.

Kids Kits continues to create imaginative handcrafted products that bring creativity, joy, and colour to homes, gardens, and children’s spaces.
A space made for kids
“Children will actually want to come, sit, read and stay. The library went from just a room with books to a space where kids will feel safe and excited to learn.”
Thank you, Balungile, for the beautiful words!
OUR CORE VALUES
Less Screen Time, More Real Play
In a world filled with screens, Kids Kits brings children back to hands-on, meaningful play. Our DIY kits encourage kids to step away from devices and engage with something real, using their hands, imagination, and curiosity to explore and create.
PLAY TOGETHER, LEARN TOGETHER
Our kits are designed to be shared. Whether with friends, siblings, or parents, they create opportunities for connection, teamwork, and social interaction. It’s not just about building something, it’s about building memories together.
Build Confidence Through Creation
There’s something powerful about making something from scratch. As children work through each step, they develop patience, problem-solving skills, and a sense of achievement. Each finished project builds confidence and encourages them to take on new challenges.
